Abeja Winery | Washington Winery of the Year 2023 – Great Northwest Wines | Women-Owned / Women Winemaker | Abeja founders Ken and Ginger Harrison came to Walla Walla Valley in the late 1990s in search of land suitable for planting world class Cabernet Sauvignon. It was while searching for an ideal vineyard location that the couple discovered an extraordinary historic farmstead that captured their hearts and sparked their imagination. The idea for Abeja began to take hold. Not only was the property suited for grape growing and winemaking, but by restoring the farmstead’s existing buildings, the Harrisons saw the opportunity to preserve the property’s rich heritage while creating a one-of-a-kind Walla Walla wine country destination.Today Abeja is the realization of the Harrisons’ vision. Winemakers Daniel Wampfler and Amy Alvarez-Wampfler craft Abeja’s acclaimed Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Merlot as well as the winery’s sought-after, limited-release estate and reserve wines, offered exclusively to Abeja List members. The Inn at Abeja’s impeccable hospitality, renowned gourmet breakfasts and refurbished farm cottages all invite visitors to slow down and unwind. Gardens, vineyards and the vistas of Walla Walla Valley encourage guests to explore while marveling in the property’s history and savoring the modern comforts of a wine country retreat. With the support of two new investment groups, Abeja’s focus remains centered on producing the highest quality experiences. By acknowledging the property’s roots, both The Inn at Abeja and Abeja winery excitedly progress towards the shared goal of becoming a sustainable winery and truly world class Inn.Spanish for bee, the name Abeja (pronounced ‘ah-BAY-ha’) was chosen to honor a deep-rooted respect for the environment. Both the winery and The Inn at Abeja operate on the belief that each of us can make a difference in the world every day. Regardless of how small the gesture or detail, the difference made is worthwhile. It is with this same philosophy that Abeja crafts its wines and welcomes guests. |
Airfield Estates Winery | Airfield Estates is a winery, vineyard, and fourth-generation family farm situated in the heart of the Yakima Valley AVA. Our first wine grapes were planted in 1968, and today, our vineyard spans over 800 acres, including 21 different wine grape varietals. The wines we craft are 100% estate-grown, reflecting exceptional varietal character, quality, and balance while expressing the subtleties of our terroir. As the name suggests, Airfield Estates has ties to aviation. Prior to our farming days, a portion of our property served as a training base for hundreds of Army Air Corps pilots during World War II.
Alexandria Nicole Cellars | Women-Owned / Women Winemaker | Jarrod was born in Prosser and learned the secrets of successful vineyard management as assistant viticulturist under the tutelage of Dr. Wade Wolfe when both worked for The Hogue Cellars. It was here that wine grape growing and winemaking became Jarrod’s passion. While working for Hogue, Jarrod was in charge of inspecting grapes and making grower recommendations to help grape varietals achieve their desired characteristics. One day, a routine inspection of a vineyard on Horse Heaven Hills turned into a paradigm shift in Jarrod’s career and his life. It was that day he noticed a nearby piece of barren land, sloping gently to the south, overlooking the Columbia River. From that moment forward, visions of vineyard blocks danced in Jarrod’s head.Soon after, a casual conversation with an old friend led Jarrod to tell the story of his Horse Heaven Hills land discovery and his vision of planting a vineyard there. Jarrod’s friend Rob Mercer (a member of a well-known local farming family) was almost as excited as Jarrod. The level of shared excitement escalated when Rob realized the land of Jarrod’s dream was owned by his father… Bud Mercer. Before long, the Mercer family joined with the Boyle family, and the dream of a vineyard on the hillside… and Destiny Ridge Vineyard was born. The first vines were planted in the fall of 1998.…THEN A WINERYOriginally, the plan for the vineyard was to use its fruit to produce small case lots for other wineries. When the vines came into full production, however, the fruit produced was of such amazing quality, Jarrod’s thoughts turned to a winery that would produce his own wines from grapes grown on Destiny Ridge Vineyard. With control over viticultural choices in his vineyard, Jarrod could monitor fruit quality from bud to bottle! The state-of-the-art Alexandria Nicole Cellars winery (named for Ali Boyle, Jarrod’s wife) was constructed in September of 2004. It was designed to suit the production of small-lot handcrafted wines.Overlooking the majestic Columbia River, the site of Alexandria Nicole Cellars’ winery and vineyard provide an awe-inspiring backdrop for several special events for wine and food enthusiasts and for community fundraisers. Private tours and barrel tastings can be arranged for an unforgettable experience… tasting the power of destiny in its place of origin.

Our estate vineyards: Les Collines, Seven Hills, Pepper Bridge, Octave, Goff, and Summit View, are farmed sustainably. We build up the soil’s health rather than deplete it and seek out earth-friendly alternatives to fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides. We are committed to not only preserving, but also improving the land for future generations. And we insist on having a good time while we’re doing it all!
Ambassador Wines of Washington | Wine & Spirits: Top 100 – 2021 Top 100 Wineries | Women-Owned / Women Winemaker | Ambassador Wines of Washington produces 100% estate grown Washington state red wines from their outstanding vineyard located in the heart of Red Mountain. |
Andrew Will Winery | BIPOC Owned / BIPOC Winemaker | Working out of a humble 60′ by 10′ winery, Chris Camarda launched Andrew Will Winery (named after his son Will and nephew Andrew) with the inaugural 1989 vintage, and he has spent the last three decades producing some of Washington’s most well-respected wines. In 2013, Chris was joined by Will who is now in charge of the winemaking, but the focus has not changed: structured, elegant, and age worthy, the wines reflect a singular voice that has never adjusted to chase scores or suit trends.Although always a focus, Chris’ attention to terroir has only intensified over time. His initial releases were single variety wines, but since 2001 he has focused blends for the single vineyard cuvées, as he feels this expresses the vineyards more clearly than a one-variety bottling. Chris and Will source from four of the best sites in Washington State, all planted to Bordeaux varieties: Champoux Vineyard and Discovery Vineyard in Horse Heaven Hills AVA, Two Blondes in Yakima Valley AVA, and Ciel du Cheval on Red Mountain AVA. The best grapes (regardless of variety) from each of these vineyards are used for the single-vineyard blends, and the remaining gets used for the “Black Label” single-variety wines. The fruit is harvested all by hand and transported by truck and then ferry boat to Vashon Island, just off Seattle, where the winery and cellar are now located.
Aquilini Family Wines | Received over 150 90+ point scores. We have received 11 best buy awards. We have received 8 editors choice awardsWe have received 3 cellar selection awards | Before they hired a vineyard manager who insists on manually watering grapes so more moisture goes to the fruit, less to the foliage. Before their “small batch” ethos helped their first Cabernet Sauvignon earn a top Wine Advocate rating. Before all of that, the Aquilini family had a history of success at everything they put their hands to. What finally led them to wine? It’s a story of destiny meets opportunity. Originally from a farming background in northern Italy, the Aquilini family became successful in North America in agriculture, construction, entertainment, and hospitality. Along the way they traveled the world and were able to enjoy some of the finest wines at the most highly regarded restaurants. Every now and then the Aquilinis noticed that a wine with a formidable pedigree and a price tag to match fell short of its reputation. Over time this observation repeated itself until one day the family had an epiphany: We can do better than this. We can create one of the world’s truly exceptional wines. And so they did.
Arbor Crest Wine Cellars | 2022 Viognier, Platinum Award; Sip Northwest 12th Annual Best of the Northwest2020 Dionysus Meritage Red Blend; Gold Award, Great Northwest Wine Competition | Women-Owned / Women Winemaker | Arbor Crest Wine Cellars is a second-generation, family-owned winery, headquartered on the historic Cliff House Estate in Spokane, WA. It was established in 1982 as the 29th winery in Washington state. Our winemaker, Kristina Mielke-van Löben Sels, is guided by the philosophy that the best wines begin in the vineyard. When selecting grapes, she focuses her attention on vineyard location and the quality of both the soil and the vines, working closely with our distinguished growers year-round to achieve the most concentrated and balanced fruit possible. After harvest, she maintains pure fruit quality through limited handling. Her results capture the power of the fruit and purity of the vineyards, producing wines with balance and style that display the natural integrity of their region. |
Archibald James Winery | Archibald James is a boutique producer of minimal-intervention wines and ciders. We handcraft small batches of delicious products from the finest fruit in Washington state.
Armour Wines | Women-Owned / Women Winemaker | Armour Wines was started in 2020 by Tyler and Sarah Armour in Wenatchee, Washington. We source grapes from select vineyards around Washington State, and produce wines with minimal intervention. For us, this means finding the best fruit possible that requires little-to-no additions (SO2 being the only additive we use) or processing. Grapes are all hand harvested and ferment whole-cluster, utilizing native yeast and bacteria that are present on the grapes naturally. No mechanical destemming, all grapes are crushed by foot. Wines are pressed in a wooden ratchet basket press, and aged in neutral french oak barrels (59 gallon), french oak puncheons (132 gallon), and sandstone jarres tanks. The wines are bottled un-fined (no additives used to clear, clean, or stabilize the wine) and un-filtered. Minimal SO2 is used pre-bottling.We strive to make fresh and vibrant wines that are drinkable right away. Low in alcohol when mother nature allows, and always looking for bright acidity and crunchy fresh tannins.
Armstrong Family Winery | Armstrong Family Winery is an owner-operated grower and producer based in the Walla Walla Valley of Washington State. For over 10 years, we have maintained a commitment to making world-class wine using traditional methods and have focused our efforts on the varieties that define our region – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. We farm 10 ½ acres of estate vineyard and work closely with other exceptional vineyards in the region to produce around 3,500 cases per year. Our approach is based on sustainable farming and low-intervention winemaking that emphasizes freshness, age-worthy structure, complexity, and purity. Our priority is to acquire fruit from some of the finest vineyards in Washington, and allow them to express themselves. We chose to focus on the grape varieties used in Bordeaux and the Rhône, as their similar latitude to Washington makes them a natural fit to excel here.Inspired by the naturalist vigneron methods in the Old World, our winemaking is based on doing less in order to let the fruit speak for itself. With this approach, sourcing the finest fruit possible is paramount. We use native yeast to ferment the wines, and bottle them unfined to preserve the most complexity and expression. Blending trials are used extensively to achieve the finest texture and balance possible.
Bacovino | Bacovino crafts wines that are clean, ripe, stylistically expressive, and aromatic wines that let the individual site characteristics of each vineyard shine. The realization of this balance between fruit, acidity, tannin, and alcohol ensures a vibrant wine full of finesse, complexity, expressive aromas, and enduring elegance.
Baer Winery | Women-Owned / Women Winemaker, Other Third-Party Sustainable Certification | Winemaker Lance Baer founded Baer Winery in 2000 with a single passion—to bring something unique to Woodinville. After years of working with some of the most prestigious wineries in the area, Lance wanted to take his winemaking skills in his own direction. Lance succeeded in handcrafting blends distinctly his own, and in April 2003 the first vintage of the winery’s signature blend, Ursa, was released. Ursa, a feminine expression of red wine, predominantly Merlot and Cabernet Franc, was soon followed by Arctos, a bolder Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend. As operations moved from an apartment in Redmond to a converted property on six rural acres in Woodinville, the winery was able to grow in production. Lance’s passion went from just 200 cases in 2003 to over 3,000 cases now. In late 2007, Baer Winery moved into the popular warehouse wine complex near downtown Woodinville – a move which has allowed us to grow to producing approximately 3,500 cases per year, with a view to continuing to increase to 5,000.Sadly, our founder, son, brother and friend, Lance Baer, passed away in May of 2007, at the age of 39. But the Baer family, Lisa and Les, with the expertise of consulting winemaker Erica Orr, are continuing to produce the wines that Lance was devoted to creating, as well as continuing to evolve and add new blends to the winery’s line-up.

Canoe Ridge Vineyard | Waterbrook | Cavatappti | Canoe Ridge Vineyard is one of Washington State’s most recognized wineries, with its namesake vineyard established in 1989 in the Horse Heaven Hills American Viticultural Area. Varieties are focused on Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The name comes from a ridge by the vineyard located along the mid-Columbia River, near the town of Paterson. The famed explorers Lewis & Clark named this crest of land as the journeyed down the Columbia River in 1805. From the river, the adventurers thought the ridge resembled an overturned canoe. 2024 marks the 30th anniversary for the Walla Walla-based winery.Established in 1984, Waterbrook Winery is a Walla Walla, Washington pioneer. Today it features a state-of-the-art winery, a tasting room with year-round events, hospitality, and a 49-acre estate vineyard in the Walla Walla Valley AVA. Winemaker John Freeman masterfully handcrafts wines that are true-to-variety, full of depth and structure, and representative of the Columbia Valley’s best.Seattle native Peter Dow was first entranced by Italian cuisine and culture during a fateful trip to Northern Italy in 1972. Upon his return to the States, he opened famed Seattle restaurant Café Juanita in 1977, a concept reflective of his dining experiences in Italian trattorias. While mastering recipes designed to showcase local ingredients, Peter grew fixated on providing a true Italian varietal house wine. In 1984, Peter planted Washington State’s first ever Nebbiolo cuttings in the prestigious Red Willow Vineyard, an ideal site with sloping hillsides reminiscent of Italy’s Piedmont region. In 1986, Peter returned to Italy to hone his experience during harvest under winemaking legend, Angelo Gaja. By 1987, Peter’s own plantings reached their first harvest and Cavatappi wines were born.

Casu Wine | BIPOC Owned / BIPOC Winemaker | Casu: (Latin, Adverb) by chance/accident, accidentally, casuallyAndrew Kowalski: Owner/WinemakerJohn Sandoval: Owner/Assistant WinemakerEric Gava: Owner/Marketing and DistributionWe are a very small wine label that came together during the Pandemic. The pandemic upended a lot of lives, changing some for the worse and others for the better. We like to think we’re the latter. The three of us came together through a series of (at the time) unfortunate events that luckily ended with us forming a partnership and creating Casu Wine. With a combined 11 years making wine for some of washingtons biggest wines as cellar hands, and Eric’s 20 years in marketing and distribution, we decided it was time we made our mark on the industry through our own label. We came up with the idea in 2020, made our first wines in 2021 and are finally ready to show you what we’ve done in 2024.
Cataclysm Wine Co. | Cataclysm was born from the understanding that things don’t always go to plan. Great upheaval is an opportunity for a new beginning. Our home in the Columbia Valley was carved by cataclysmic ice age floods that tore across the Pacific Northwest, transforming the landscape, and blanketing the valleys with silt carried from hundreds of miles away. As the last ice age came to a close, the glacial dam holding back Lake Missoula would periodically burst, releasing a 400-foot wall of water that tore across the Pacific Northwest at up to 80 miles an hour. The floods devastated everything in their path and reshaped the landscape all the way to the Pacific Ocean. The floodwaters scoured soil and sediment from the land as they went, pooling and eddying through what is now the Columbia Valley. When the water ultimately receded, the valley was blanketed in a deep layer of nutrient-poor but well-drained silt. Pair that with Eastern Washington’s reliable sunshine and epic temperature swings, and you have near-perfect conditions for growing grapes. And so, ancient lakes became modern vineyards.20,000 years after the floods, this wine is true to the land and the hands that made it—classically drinkable but surprisingly complex, it is a testament to why Washington State has become one of the most exciting wine-growing regions in the world. Like nature, it balances power with grace and reminds us that our world is in a constant state of reinvention.

Gramercy Cellars | Top 100 Winery, Wine & Spirits Magazine | A Manhattan-based sommelier tastes some Washington State wines and is so inspired, he sells everything to move across the country to make his own. That’s the start of the story of Gramercy Cellars, where a close eye on the grapes (picked for almost-peak ripeness, mostly organic), matched with minimalist wine making techniques (no or little new oak, no additives) and a lot of time (extended aging) has created wine that’s considered some of the best that Washington offers. The Harrington family moved to Walla Walla in 2005 to make a specific kind of old-world-meets-new Rhône and Bordeaux varietals. Their goal was to utalize the near perfect growing conditions near Walla Walla to create some of the best-reviewed wines from the region. The results are intense, yet restrained; elegant, yet earthy. This kind of balance starts with the vineyards. The Walla Walla and surrounding AVAs offer the perfect climate and soil conditions for the kind of wines they wanted to make. Gramercy farms its grapes from old vines, carefully tended. It owns three estate vineyards, and controls several others, to ensure the grapes are grown and picked for the specific profile Gramercy is trying to achieve. Many of its wines—particularly its Rhônes—are single-vineyard estate wines. At the winery, the Gramercy team carefully design the fermentations; sometimes in concrete, sometimes in oak, always with patience and minimalism. The result is honest and complex wines that pair well with food and age well. And get reviewed well!

Hedges Family Estate | We were recognized with Robert Parker’s Green Emblem for sustainability in December 2022. “The Robert Parker Green Emblem is a prestigious award created three years ago to recognize and celebrate the most extraordinary cases of sustainable efforts in the wine industry. It is a symbol of honor and distinction granted to wine producers that have demonstrated outstanding achievements in sustainability and environmental stewardship.” Hedges is one of nine wineries recognized in the United Sates and one of two in Washington State to be recognized. | Demeter or Biodynamic Certified | Estate grown. Family operated. Biodynamically farmed. These concepts lay the foundation for Hedges Family Estate, a family-owned property in the heart of Washington wine country. With more than thirty years of vintages behind them, Tom and Anne-Marie Hedges can proudly look back at their pioneering efforts to help establish the modern Washington wine industry, and specifically, their efforts in establishing the renowned Red Mountain American Viticultural Area.Beginning as negociants selling their first Hedges-branded Columbia Valley wine to the Swedish government in the late eighties, the Hedges quickly realized the importance of site for producing world-class wines. Scraping together enough cash for a down-payment, they purchased a fifty-acre parcel on the dusty southwest slope of Red Mountain, a barely-known growing region at the time. The Hedges then dedicated their lives to spreading the great wines of Red Mountain around the world and have now acquired another seventy acres and built a stunning French Chateau at the center of their organic farm and vineyards.More than thirty years later, the second generation, Christophe and Sarah, continue their parents’ vision. With an equal amount of passion for the land, they spearheaded the transition to Biodynamic and organic farming. Now, over half of the vineyards and gardens are Demeter- certified Biodynamic, with the rest of the estate in transition.Through Biodynamic and organic farming and natural winemaking, the Hedges family expresses the unique characteristics of their five estate vineyards. By farming and winemaking with minimal inputs, they believe they are truly capturing the terroir and showing respect for what nature has provided them.Anne-Marie grew up in Champagne, France, and is no doubt the messenger of these old-world philosophies and beliefs that have preserved the land for thousands of years before her. Great care is taken to continue this preservation for future generations. Practices such as early picking, natural fermentation, and conservative oak management lead to their traditionalist, international style of subtlety, finesse, and respect for the fruit. Wine is life, culture and tradition. The Hedges family lives and breathes this every day and hopes, that with every glass of their wine, you will feel this energy and connect with the land that provides it. |

Idilico | Idilico is the only winery in Washington focusing exclusively on Spanish varietals grown in the unique Washington State vineyards. Spanish varietal wines are the most pleasurable wines around. Who doesn’t love a deep and structured Tempranillo, a juicy and luscious Garnacha or a steely acid driven Albariño?Washington vineyards are ideally suited to grow the finicky Spanish cultivars. Contrary to popular belief, wine regions in Spain are not balmy and endlessly sunny. In fact most top growing regions in Spain best resemble Washington State. Dry desert conditions, scorching day time temperatures with huge temperature swings at night all wrapped up in a short growing season and frosty winters. As the saying goes: “Nueve meses de invierno tres meses de infierno” (Nine months of Winter three months of Hell). Yep..Sounds like Eastern Washington.
itä wines | 2023 Wine & Spirits “Winery to Watch” | Women-Owned / Women Winemaker | itä wines was founded in 2019 by Kelsey Albro Itämeri after she did a fair bit of career dabbling – from politics to reality TV production, to slanging drinks behind a bar. In 2016 she moved to Walla Walla and enrolled in the Enology & Viticulture program at WWCC. Kelsey complemented ye olde book learning with making lots of wine in her garage and internships at Balboa and The Walls in Walla Walla, as well as at Domaine Jean Chartron in Puligny-Montrachet in Burgundy. At itä wines we make wines that tell a story about where and how they were grown. We only source grapes from the eastern foothills of the Blue Mountains, as close to Kelsey’s family’s farm as possible, with the eventual goal of producing estate wines. These hillsides produce lighter-bodied wines with racy acidity, and our low-impact winemaking style reflects that via early pick dates, no water or acid additions, restrained use of oak, and minimal fining and filtration. |
Januik | The Novelty Hill and Januik partnership began in 2000, shortly after Mike began consulting on the planting of the Alberg family’s Stillwater Creek Vineyard on the Royal Slope of the Frenchman Hills in Washington State’s Columbia Valley. Though an uncharted growing region at the time, Mike liked what the site offered and was intrigued by the Albergs’ interest in planting a diverse selection of clones. He encouraged the family to consider making wine from the site; they agreed, provided Mike serve as winemaker. Novelty Hill was born. Just prior to Stillwater Creek’s planting, Mike and Carolyn Januik had undertaken a venture of their own, establishing Januik Winery in 1999. It was the realization of a dream that took hold in 1980 when the couple sold their Ashland, Oregon wine shop for Mike to study winemaking at UC Davis. After graduation, the Januiks moved to Washington to be closer to family. California friends thought it was a risky move. Washington wines were largely unknown. But over the ensuing decades, Mike proved them wrong. He crushed his first grapes in Washington in 1984 and quickly developed a reputation for quality winemaking just as the state’s reputation for world-class wines began to take hold. After crushing his first three vintages in Walla Walla, Mike moved winemaking operations to Woodinville’s warehouse district in 2002 before putting down roots in 2007 at the stylish, modern winery Novelty Hill and Januik share today. From the start, it has been a family-run operation. In the fall of 2009, Andrew Januik joined his dad in the cellar full-time. Today, he collaborates with Mike and winemaker Scott Moeller on all aspects of production in addition to crafting his own label, Andrew Januik Wines, launched in 2011.

Julian Margot | Women-Owned / Women Winemaker | Julian Margot’s Winemaker Leah Kellogg, a Clinical Laboratory Scientist, was first inspired to get into winemaking during a 2013 trip visiting the Niagara-on-the-Lake wine area in Ontario. Learning about the diversity of wines and winemaking practices in different regions was intriguing. Devouring any wine book that could be found in her native Wisconsin town, as well as visiting and interviewing regional winemakers, it became clear a career in winemaking was in the stars. In 2016 Leah enrolled in the remote winemaking program through Missouri State University. Leah, her husband Chris, and their fur-child Nettie moved cross-country to the Seattle area where they immediately felt right at home and ready to begin their wine journey.Leah landed her first wine job the following year interning for JM Cellars, learning first hand from Winemaker John Bigelow and Assistant Winemaker Tyler Farnsworth (Winemaker of Laterus Winery) the ins and outs of winemaking. In 2018 Leah received her Master’s in Plant Science with a concentration in Enology (the science of winemaking) from MSU. She then went on to be JM Cellars’ Enologist, a position held for 5 years. Julian Margot came to life in 2020 strangely enough after a particularly difficult harvest day. Upon returning home, Leah told Chris she wanted to start their own winery. He agreed, he had been waiting for this day to come. The name behind Julian Margot is simply a blending of Chris and Leah’s favorite names. Seven years after taking the plunge and deciding to move to Washington State to turn the dream into reality, Leah and Chris’ wine “child” has made it’s debut!

Le Doubble Troubble Wine Co. | 100 POINT WINES. (Judged by our mothers). | This epic tale begins with two friends, both passionate about good wine and deep powder, who met while chasing the best wine and the most awesome snow in the magical land known as Tahoe, that’s Lake Tahoe, show some respect. Several years were spent with memorable powder runs followed by evenings around long tables with good friends, and wonderful wine. Talks of hopes and dreams just flew by. Eventually, not fast enough according to their parents, they got a little older, and their dreams got a little bolder. After one particularly memorable gathering, they stayed up late to ponder the meaning of life and their future. They agreed their shared passion for wine was the direction they should follow and that it was their time to make their mark on the wine industry. Late night conversations turned into daytime discussions and serious strategic planning. They determined that it was time to leave their beloved Tahoe powder and move to Oregon, home of the Willamette Valley and Pinot Noir. They seized the day, made their bold move, and the Le Doubblé Troubblé Wine Co., twice the trouble and twice the fun, was born. Since the initial move to Oregon, LDT Wines has moved to the Columbia River Gorge, where wine and skiing meet. Come visit!

Milbrandt Family wines | 2019 Winery of the Year, Top 100 Wine Enthusiast, Top 100 Wine Sepcatator, | Milbrandt Vineyards are concentrated in the Wahluke Slope (AVA established in 2006) and the Ancient Lakes of the Columbia Valley (AVA established in 2012 with the help of Butch and Jerry). The high elevation (up to 1,475ft) and shallow soils of the Columbia Valley make it an unassuming and distinctly beautiful place to grow grapes. Both growing areas share the same low rainfall and long sunny days during the growing season, yet each area has very distinct terroir. Wahluke Slope is especially ideal for red wines and Ancient Lakes for white wines. Butch and Jerry were careful about matching the right variety to the right site. Known as some of the best growers in the state, Butch and Jerry’s fruit is amongst the most sought after in Washington.

Novelty Hill | Other Third-Party Sustainable Certification | The Novelty Hill and Januik partnership began in 2000, shortly after Mike began consulting on the planting of the Alberg family’s Stillwater Creek Vineyard on the Royal Slope of the Frenchman Hills in Washington State’s Columbia Valley. Though an uncharted growing region at the time, Mike liked what the site offered and was intrigued by the Albergs’ interest in planting a diverse selection of clones. He encouraged the family to consider making wine from the site; they agreed, provided Mike serve as winemaker. Novelty Hill was born.Just prior to Stillwater Creek’s planting, Mike and Carolyn Januik had undertaken a venture of their own, establishing Januik Winery in 1999.

Prospice Wines | A lawyer and an architect walk into a vineyard…perhaps this sounds like the start of a joke? In this case, it was a meeting that ultimately led to the creation of a winery that Wine Enthusiast’s Sean Sullivan calls “one of the most exciting entrants on the Washington wine stage in the last decade.”From this first meeting in Walla Walla Community College’s Stan Clarke Vineyard, it quickly became apparent to both Jay Krutulis (the lawyer) and Matt Reilly (the architect) that they held a shared perspective on wines and a shared vision for winemaking. As they crafted wines together and worked side by side in the College’s winery and vineyards, it wasn’t long before the notion of founding their own winery together began to coalesce. While they continued to hone their skills working at other Walla Walla wineries, the property we now lovingly refer to as “The Little Pink Winery” became available, and the vision became a reality starting in the summer of 2017. A frantic dash to procure fruit, barrels, equipment, and other resources ensued, and with the 2017 harvest a few short months later, the Prospice journey was off and running. At Prospice our focus is on making balanced, elegant wines that celebrate the source fruit and the vineyard sites. We embrace modern scientific research relating to winemaking, and we use analyses and data to understand and guide the production of the best wines we can make from that fruit. But this is all in the service of the most subjective but most important tool we have: our palate. Ultimately, a wine is a small work of art in a bottle, and we seek to make each Prospice wine unique, expressive, and beautiful. The Prospice name, meaning “look to the future” in Latin, reflects both our belief in the inherently optimistic and forward-looking nature of wine and winemaking and our respect for their deeply rooted traditions. The clean, modern lines of the Prospice name in our logo sit in counterpoint to the lower rendering of the same name in ancient Etruscan characters, signifying this dichotomy of future and past.Winemaking is full of moments of anticipation and expectation. At every stage of fermentation and aging, and as the wine goes into bottle, the winemaker recites the repeated mantra — “I can’t wait to see what this wine becomes…” — whether in a year, two years, or twenty. But simultaneously, winemaking is also imbued with an unshakeable reverence for the ancient origins of the craft.Prospice — the name and the winery — is a celebration of the past, of all the years of experience that have brought the winemaking craft to where it is today, and a means to carry that craft into an exciting future. We hope you will join us for the adventure.

Quiddity Wines | 2023 Washington State Winery of the Year from Washington Wine Awards | Quiddity means “the quality that makes a thing what it is, or the essential nature of a thing.” It crystalizes what I am trying to do, make quality wines that display the essential nature of their grape varietals. Also, in retiring from my corporate job and starting this winery in Woodinville, I wanted to get much closer to the essential nature of life and what is truly important to me. Things that I have found important in my life include friends, family, love, hard work, adventure, travel, learning, creativity, food, and wine (to name a few). I have tried to reflect this essential nature of life in naming the wines and everything I do at Quiddity Wines. I hope you enjoy the wines as well as the philosophy. Please join us at our tasting room located in the Warehouse Winery District of Woodinville and connect with award winning, Rhone inspired wines accentuated with puzzles, stories, words, and whimsey. Sheridan Vineyard | It was on a cold wintry day in December of 1996 that Scott Greer first stood on the land which would become Sheridan Vineyard. There was snow on the ground, covering the overgrown concord vines and apple trees that had been abandoned to nature on the 76 acres listed for sale. Despite the snow, he could see the potential of the land and instinctively knew that he wanted to own this property. This moment was the culmination of events that had started earlier that year after Scott had completed the building of his dream home. In celebration, he purchased a bottle of 1994 Napa Cab to celebrate. It was a revelatory moment for him which would alter the course of his entire future.Months later, after broadening his wine knowledge with frequent visits to Napa, spending time in its vineyards, and conversing with winemakers, he began to reflect on his experiences. He had no formal viticulture or winemaking education, but his determination and work ethic had previously proven capable of achieving success. He believed he could craft a wine that would display the high level of quality he had grown to love. Scott would finalize the purchase of the site and, within a few short months, would clear the land and plant the first vines.

Don discovered the perfect place nestled at the foot of the Cascade Mountains on the site of an historic coal mine where European-born coal miners made their own wines from local wild huckleberries and blackberries.Since opening its doors, the goal of Swiftwater Cellars is to create a winery destination in parity with the world’s finest venues. Swiftwater Cellars offers you an experience to partake of premium wines made by internationally acclaimed winemakers, dine upon sophisticated Pacific Northwest cuisine made from the freshest ingredients while unwinding, rejuvenating and having fun. Additionally, the five-star Suncadia Resort is close by for added amenities. While the Swiftwater Cellars experience has a European sophistication to it, there is also something distinctly American about it – from the architectural details and mining relics scattered throughout the facility to the casual, friendly, comfortable atmosphere intended to make you feel like you’re at home.

Terra Blanca Winery & Estate Vineyard | Women-Owned / Women Winemaker, Other Third-Party Sustainable Certification | Terra Blanca began as the vision of Keith and ReNae Pilgrim. Raised adjacent to Napa Valley by parents that embraced the wine culture, followed by a UC Davis education in enology, viticulture and geology, Keith was passionate about wine. ReNae’s background in accounting, along with an adventurous spirit enabled the founding of Terra Blanca. After purchasing virgin land in a desert consisting of sage brush located on the southwest slopes of what has become recognized as one the world’s great growing regions, Keith and ReNae began development of their Red Mountain vineyard and winery in early 1993. Terra Blanca crushed their first grapes in the autumn of ‘93 with purchased fruit and crushed the first estate grapes in the fall of ‘97. Currently, Terra Blanca has over 115 acres of vines in production with more added each year. Terra Blanca is Latin for “white earth,” which signifies the white carbonate-rich soils in its estate vineyard. The high-mineral, high-carbonate soils, coupled with the warm, dry and breezy southwest exposure allows Terra Blanca’s vineyard to produce concentrated grapes with a defined sense of place.

TruthTeller Winery | TruthTeller Winery is a Washington-based winery, commercially licensed in 2014. Chris and Dawn Loeliger started the winery in Woodinville, where TruthTeller has had a tasting room since 2016. They were joined by their son, Keith Whisenhunt, in 2017. In 2022, a dear friend, Rob Wohr, also joined. Chris, Keith and Rob share the wine-making responsibilities. Of course, as a small winery, everyone must wear many hats! The 2023 harvest was TruthTeller’s 10th. Change has been a constant over that time. In 2018, TruthTeller expanded to Walla Walla, opening our tasting room there. In 2020, all production moved to Walla Walla. We still maintain a tasting room in Woodinville. TruthTeller now produces approximately 3500 cases per year.TruthTeller produces under two different labels, its initial TruthTeller label and a second label, The Miscreant Project, which launched in 2018. The two brands play well off one another. The name “TruthTeller” is derived from Chris Loeliger’s Swiss-German last name, which apparently means “village idiot.” Preferring the role of a Jester (who could speak truth to kings), the family decided on “TruthTeller”. The Miscreant Project is an edgier, tongue in cheek, interpretation of the Jester image. We are all fortunate that Washington State supports such a wonderful variety of wines. With a love of all that diversity, TruthTeller produces a number of different wines, including rosés, white wine, Bordeaux and Rhone blends and single varietals. TruthTeller is very gratified to have earned various awards and points for their wines, and most importantly, the praise and loyalty of its customers.

Two Mountain Winery | Other Third-Party Sustainable Certification | When we set out on this wine venture in 2000, we hadn’t even given Copeland Vineyard its name. In fact, when our family made the decision to add a vineyard and winery to its storied farming portfolio, we were merely “the help” (tractor drivers, forklift operators, El Ranchito take-out retrievers). Sure enough, our childhood “summers on the farm” eventually became “life on the farm” as we became increasingly involved with the new and exciting wine project.Even before we began making wine, we were drawn to the experience of it. Our fondest memories were those of family and friends accompanied by lively conversation, laughter and an intriguing assortment of wine.It soon became evident that we had not so much found our calling, but it had found us. One could argue that four generations of Yakima Valley farming pulsing through our veins predisposed us to dirty fingernails and an inherent love of the land. We couldn’t agree more. So, when life and a heavy dose of fate provided us the opportunity to make the winery a true test of our brotherly love, we jumped at the chance and purchased it from our family in 2006. What was once Schmidt Orchards, planted by our grandfather, Phil Schmidt in 1951, became Copeland Vineyard that we planted with our uncle, Ron Schmidt, in 2000.Fast forward to now, and you will find us living, breathing and drinking our work. We offer a versatile collection of estate grown wines. Our unique “working facility” exudes a welcoming, approachable and educational experience for all wine-lovers. Our name, Two Mountain Winery, was inspired by the majestic views of Mt. Adams and Mt. Rainier, which serve as the backdrop of Copeland Vineyard. At the end of the day, it is our job to make wine. It’s in our best interest to make good wine. We really like doing it, for us and for you. (Plus, we’ve been self-employed for too long – nobody would hire us now!)
Two Vintners / Covington Hill Country | Two Vintners was founded in 2009 with a partnership between an acclaimed young winemaker, Morgan Lee, and the owners of Covington Cellars, David and Cindy Lawson. At the time, Syrah and Merlot were the outcast varietals of the wine industry. However, the quiet secret among those in the Washington wine scene was that they are two of the best varietals the state had to offer. Thumbing our nose to those unfortunate trends created the foundation of the Two Vintners portfolio. This willingness to do the unpopular but delicious has guided the brand as we have progressed, this has helped us create wines that you won’t see anywhere else. Wine at Two Vintners is about the experience. Branching out. Trying new styles. New varietals. We want to expose you to wines that show how unique Washington wine can be.

Upsidedown Wine | Owen Bargreen’s TOP 100 Wines of the Year – 2023Owen Bargreen’s TOP 100 Wines of the Year – 2022 | Other Third-Party Sustainable Certification | Upsidedown produces wines that show balance and put sense of place in each bottle. Being growers ourselves, we believe that wine is made in the vineyard. Practicing minimal intervention throughout the winemaking process is our duty to the land we cultivate. We find that the key ingredient to beautifully made wines, is to be as hands-on as possible in the vineyard and as hands-off in the cellar. Taking the manipulation and additives out of the process to allow true terroir to shine. We were born into vineyards and winemaking, but we also believe in doing the best we can with what we have. This is why Upsidedown partners with a hand full of non-profit organizations with which our wines donate a portion of the proceeds back to. Being transparent with our process from vine to bottle is what we continue to do. Follow along with every season on Instagram at @USdoingwine to get the BTS view on what it takes to grow, make, and sell wine as a small company. |
UVA FUREM WINERY | Washington states 1000th winery | Our Story: Uva Furem was founded by two Air Force veteran brothers, Jens and T.J. Hansen, in 2018. Washington State’s 1000th bonded winery, Uva is the only 100% disabled veteran owned winery in the country. Our story begins in 1995 when Jens was deployed to Italy flying peace keeping missions in Bosnia and Kosovo. Jens took every opportunity to visit local wineries and vineyards with his fellow Italian aviators. There are countless stories of Jens, throughout his 24 years of service in the US Air Force, of Jens exploring local wines even under (perhaps) dangerous conditions. As fate would have it, one of his last duty stations was Travis Airforce Base near Napa, CA. He walked into a local winery and asked if he could help out in the cellar. With a medical retirement imminent (10 deployments and quite a few sustained injuries from “hard landings”), the gears in Jens’ head began turning. Could his GI Bill benefits be used towards going back to school for winemaking? Turns out they could!Jens and his brother purchased an old honeybee farm on the side of a mountain in Maple Valley, WA and transformed the barn on the property into the production facility. Jens is indeed truly a Lucky Bastard, because while out smuggling more grapes to keep up with the Uva’s explosive growth, he met Wednesday, a winemaker in Eastern Washington. Besides having extensive winemaking experience, she also shared a military connection as a military spouse for over 10 years in a previous marriage. Crazy in love, Wednesday joined Jens on the mountain for the 2023 vintage, and the two plan on growing the Uva Furem brand together as a husband-and-wife winemaking team.Winemaking philosophy: “it’s a good day when nobody is shooting at us”. We have low intervention practices (i.e. no extra chemicals or sugar), preferring to show off the spectacular quality of Washington wine grapes. The name “Uva Furem” is Latin for “Grape Smuggler,” as a tribute to our military history and legacy. Each bottle features a unique name, call sign, and story because all great stories are made better when told with a glass of wine. Here’s to us and those like us!

Woodinville Ciderworks & Emyrical Cidery & Orchard | BIPOC Owned / BIPOC Winemaker, Women-Owned / Women Winemaker, Other Third-Party Sustainable Certification | Woodinville Ciderworks started in 2014 in a small warehouse in the Woodinville wine district. Their focus is on crafting small and micro-batch ciders from varietal heirloom apples, barrel aging, and conferments with seasonal fruit. A big part of the culture of Woodinville is focused on collaborations and special projects as we work with cider-makers and orchardists throughout the region to craft complex beverages which showcase the characters of the fruit. Empyrical was founded by husband and wife Adam Wargacki and Elizabeth Lockhart. Their ciders are refined by considered sips, edited, and blended by consensus. About 1/3 of their limited volume is grown onsite in Snohomish, Washington, where they have seven acres of over 1,500 pome fruit trees. They blend their estate harvest with regional heirloom apples to attain the aromatic intensity and tannic structure of fine wine, enlivened by the fruit-forward approachability of a budding Pacific Northwest cider style. Fermented in oak and aged mostly in glass, every bottle is best poured carefully off the lees and warmed in hand.
